Welcome

Greek Studies on Site is a center for the study of Greek literature, philosophy, and culture, located in Athens, Greece. We offer three-week summer programs, as well as a spring semester program of studies organized in collaboration with the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Summer Program

June 9-29, 2025

The summer program combines regular instruction in a classroom setting with extensive field study. We offer intensive three-week seminars on Greek Mythology and Greek philosophy. During these seminars we also visit all the major archaeological sites and museums in Athens and beyond, including the Acropolis, the Athenian Agora, the Kerameikos, the National Archaeological Museum, the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion, the Sanctuary of Demeter at Eleusis, as well as Mycenae and Delphi.

The Semester Program

February 17-May 31, 2025

"I feel that when I returned home, I was more capable of living my life with the intention of seeking good things, because I was able to practice that kind of life in this program."

Experiential Learning

All Greek Studies on Site  programs involve learning on site: we discuss Athenian democracy at the Pnyx, the meeting place of the Athenian assembly; we study Greek temples at the Acropolis and the Athenian Agora; we practice ordering food in Modern Greek at a family tavern;

we visit the farmers' market; we discuss contemporary art with local artists at their workshops, and learn about Greek farm life at a local farm.

Our Students Say

Blanca.jpg

"While I loved university, I often wondered what it would be like to learn outside the confines of a traditional classroom. In Athens, we walked through history, visiting sites and learning about their archaeological significance, and their connection to the texts we studied. Standing on the Areopagus, the setting of the final play in the Oresteia, felt as if I were stepping into the texts I had read.

Our classes were engaging and interactive, and our teachers' passion was contagious."

Our Vision

01

Lifelong learning

We strongly appreciate and aim to cultivate intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. Greek Studies on Site programs are rigorous, requiring careful preparation and active participation in class discussion.

03

A rich multicultural experience

Each year, we welcome students from many countries around the world. Communal living at the Greek Studies on Site Guesthouse provides an opportunity to live and learn alongside people of different backgrounds, who share a passion for learning.

02

A sense of community

We strive to create a community of learners tied by bonds of friendship that will extend beyond the classroom, and beyond the end of the academic program.

04

Personal Attention

The small number of participants accepted into our programs allows us to tailor our seminars to the specific interests and needs of our students.

Our story

Greek Studies on Site was founded in 2013, when Georgia returned to Athens from the United States, having completed a Ph.D. in Classics at the University of Virginia.

The summer program was originally run in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute at Athens, and hosted at its premises. In 2018, Greek Studies on Site moved to its own premises in Vironas, Athens. Since 2022, we have also been running a full semester program in collaboration with the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
